“Shuk” it up!!

With the New Year celebrations now after us, it’s a time to try something new too. New fruits and vegetables have come into season and the fresh flowers we are able to buy are starting to change.

There is no better barometer for what is in season in Israel than the Shuk, the hustle and bustle of the market, the mountains of fresh produce and  the narrow walkways filled with people doing their weekly shop. The Shuk can sometimes seem a bit daunting if you don’t know your way around  so at IbookIsrael we have a few tricks to navigate you through. In Jerusalem, at the Machane Yehuda Shuk, you can choose to wander through, but there are more structured ways to see what the Shuk has to  offer.

One option if you want to take things more at your own pace is do use a Shuk Bite card. This gives you a map and six stops along the way which  gives you samples of all of the Shuk favorites. From the middle eastern delicacy of Halva to freshly brewed coffee, this tour leads you through the  sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the Shuk.

Finally, you can do things on your own. Make your way down the narrow alleys that are filled with produce and vendors selling everything from banana’s to bandana’s and from juice to jewelry.

The Shuk is filled with treasures that are yours to explore so this Friday, take the time to head to the nearest shuk to you. Whether that is the Machane Yehuda Shuk in Jerusalem, the Carmel Market in Tel Aviv or the Flea market in Old Jaffa you will find something to interest you.
